What we do

JMC (aka J. Melnick and Co) was founded in Cape Town over 100 years ago. Since 1970 it has been part of the Melbro Group of Companies, one of the largest privately owned trading concerns in South Africa.

JMC is in the business of brand-building; making a carefully-selected range of premium international food brands available, to discerning customers, throughout the Southern African region.

Sustained FMCG success depends not only on brand intrinsics and communication, but also, critically, on the extent to which the brand is optimally exposed in the market place. Much of what we in JMC do is about getting this exposure right.

Inbound Logistics

South Africa is blessed with modern ports, advanced (and generally effective) customs and regulatory practices and high quality transport infrastructure. There is nevertheless a great deal that can go wrong between the factory door and the retail shopping floor, and our generations of experience are an incalculably valuable advantage.


Warehousing and Distribution

As part of the Melbro Group, JMC enjoys the use of large, modern warehousing facilities in South Africa’s four major metropoles: Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

The picking, packing and despatching processes continue to be driven by (increasingly skilled) people – but constant attention is given to new technologies and new insights that ensure ever-improving service levels. Witness the state-of-the-art reach-trucks, hand scanners, climate control systems, etc.

JMC services the whole of South and Southern Africa, having built up close working partnerships with major transport specialists Uti and Kargo, as well as dozens of smaller owner-driver concerns.


Sales and marketing

As the industry in general has drifted from selling to order-taking, JMC has moved resolutely in the opposite direction. We have a team of about 70 sales and marketing professionals, all carefully selected for a blend of expertise, integrity, friendliness, enthusiasm and a special love for building quality brands. Working closely together with partners in the advertising, merchandising and promoting industries, the JMC team are devoted to ensuring maximum satisfaction (and choice) for retailers and consumers alike.


Analysis and Communication

JMC is fortunate to have world class systems, tools and operating procedures – all of them customised over decades in response to real-life challenges and opportunities. And all of them operated by a world class community of operatives, analysts and administrators.
